You are probably trying to stretch your tire budget this year and you have enough just for one set of tires. Then, you think about purchasing winter tires as conditions are worse in the cold months and drive them all year long. However, these tires are not designed for year-round use and although they will keep your vehicle rolling, their performance, lifespan, and fuel economy are compromised. If you want to buy winter tires, keep the following in mind:

Why Winter Tires should be Used in the Cold Months Only

Tire manufacturers have spent many years to perfect rubber compound formulas to make sure the tires will stand up against specific weather conditions at various kinds of year. A winter tire’s compound is made to stay soft and provide grip at temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius. Summer and all-season tires have a harder compound which offers their best grip at temperatures above 7 degrees, and on dry, warm conditions.

Also, your tires have tread patterns. Winter tires come with an aggressive tread pattern which is ideal for biting ice and snow and pushing slush away. Meanwhile, summer and all-season tires provide quiet, comfortable low rolling resistance ride in mild wet and dry conditions.

What Happens when Use Drive Winter Tires Year-Round

Because winter tires are not designed for use all year round, there are consequences when you use them otherwise. These include:

  • Faster and uneven wear. The rubber compound of a winter tire will wear quickly on warm and hot road surfaces. The unusual fast wear can be uneven.  Winter tires are intended to last up to three seasons; however, when they are on your vehicle all year round, they will need replacement sooner than expected.
  • Poor fuel economy. Summer tires come with a harder compound which makes them roll easily and this means savings at the pump. Driving on winter tires year-round will mean spending more on fuel.
  • Poor performance. Winter tires don’t perform better on dry pavement because they are designed to provide superior traction on ice and snow. You will sacrifice handling if you drive on them on dry and wet roads. Also, using winter tires in the summer can make the tires produce noise and squirm.

In case your budget is just for one set of tires this year; however, you have to replace all sets, think about all-season tires. These tires are a safer option than choosing between summer and winter tires and sacrificing on handling ability and performance.
